led climbing holds

by:Demo     2020-08-15
I had an idea with my friend to build a climbing wall with a climbing bracket with an embedded LEDs instead of using a tape holder to indicate the route.
In the spirit of \"going to big or going home\", we decided to build a very big wall for \"burning people!
We\'re happy to do something cooler with this wall. -
Enjoy watching music and playing rock climbing! (
The finished wall is the third picture. -
It was a very sweet experience! )
Over the past few months, we have been iterating over the design and manufacturing of the brackets, eventually locking in designs, materials and electronics.
This Instructable will teach you how to make one of these brackets, how to install it on the wall you built, and how to control the brackets to set the route or hold a light show Dance Party (
From Arduino to professional lighting systems, our systems are all controlled, and there are a lot of things in. ).
I will also explain some of the design decisions we made in the process.
We will not discuss how to build a climbing wall;
There are already some good guidance on how to build climbing walls, and I encourage you to look at them.
First, all of our code that controls the board lights and Eagle files (
It\'s all open source! )
Can be found on our gith page.
Bill of Materials (Holds)
* Note: You also need a 3/8 Bolt and wall with corresponding T-nut to bolt to. -
1x climbing stick to cast.
You can do it yourself with foam (
Not covered in this structure, but others exist)
, Or use the existing (
But pay attention to copyright! )-
Rubber cement and spare carton for adhesive bracket
Silicone for mold manufacturing.
I used Oomoo 25 and Rebound 25 in this project.
In the next steps, I will explain the pros and cons of both. -polyurethane (or polyester)2-part resins. I used Smooth-Cast 325/326 (
The main difference is the life of the pot, which I will explain later). -
1x circuit board with led can be cast in the bracket.
See below for Motherboard BOM. -
1x3/8 \"gasket when mixing silicone and plastic (
Polyurethane/polyester)
Compound, please do this in the well.
Ventilation area, wear gloves to protect the skin.
Take the time to read the MSDS and technical announcements for any product you use so that you can understand any additional risks and understand what to do if you accidentally splash on you.
Polyurethane or polyester compounds can have some nasty length
The term has health effects related to breathing or skin contact, so depending on the exact situation you are using, additional PPE may be required.
Bill of Materials (
Electronic equipment)
* Note 1: github contains files for regular RGB LEDs and controllable WS2812 RGB LEDs.
The Stand for Our Burning Man Project will use the WS2812 board, but I also have the controller board ready for use with the other two options.
* Note 2: I used the passive elements in the 0603 package, but if you are more satisfied with the other dimensions, you can modify the board in the Eagle to use a resistor/cap of different sizes.
Led is also SMD element;
Both are 5050 packed. -2x LEDs (RGB or WS2812)-
4x28 ad hoc working group wires with different colors preferred.
Select the length according to the height of the Wall (
I usually pour a little water into it, guess how many liquid ounces I need, and dry the mold. (
Be careful that the mold is actually dry--
If there\'s still the rest, the water could mess up your cast part! )
Remember to fully mix the two parts together, often scrape the Cup when mixing.
Once the two parts are basically homogeneous (
There are no yellow or transparent distinguishing stripes)
Slowly pour the liquid into the mold.
Be careful not to splash any plastic on yourself, and be careful not to make the mold too full.
The plastic should cover the nut of the fixing bolt so that it can come into contact with the Wall smoothly.
At this time, the rebound 25 mold may need to be adjusted a little to actually be flat-
As always, be careful when doing this and it is not 100% necessary to make your mold completely flat.
Once you pour the plastic in, it\'s time to play the waiting game. Smooth-
Casting 325 can be demoulded after 10 minutes (
I usually wait 30)
326 an hour later (
I usually wait 2 hours).
It gets very hot when this material is cured, so be careful.
As an inference, if the material is hot when you want to disassemble it, you will want to wait until it cools to room temperature.
Now you have your own LED Light module. up hold!
To LED Light module it up, connect it to the correct controller board and program it with the correct code (all on github)
And power on!
Ardunos can also control these lights if you can\'t make the controller board-
Try using the Adafruit NeoPixel instruction to control the WS2812 stand, or find one of the many instructions on how to power the RGB led.
Note: Be very careful when applying the correct voltage to your lamp.
WS2812s only needs 6-7V (
Although I have successfully reached 9 v)
I used to blow one with 12 V.
Similarly, current is usually required for RGB LEDs-
Limit the resistance to prevent those from blowing up.
Do your duty here and you will be happier :)
I drilled a 6-to fit the bracket on the wall-
Hole pattern on the wall (
These think that T-should be cleared-nut;
You can use a spare board for more precise positioning holes)
And feed wire and
By rotating the bolt.
Then I use the Quickie 2x2 connector (
That\'s why wires of different colors are so useful)
, And insert the connector into the connector on my board.
Clouds of led pcb board failures surround the world of led light engine in particular, simply because people don’t pay as much attention to the About Us as they should do.
